I have a Hemi in my Plymouth (with a Mitsubishi engine).
A Hemi is a engine with a hemispherical head. Typically the valves are opposed to one another instead of side by side.

Hemi is not just an engine its the design of the cylinder head specifically.

The hemi design does two good things and one bad thing for
performance. The first good thing is the ability to use truly
gigantic valves. Because the intake and exhaust valves are tilted
at a large angle to the cylinder axis, the valves can be large
without touching each other. Large valves means very high flow
potential, especially for racing engines (smaller valves are more
than sufficient for the street).
The second good thing is the fact that the valves open into the
middle of the cylinder because of the large angle relative to the
cylinder axis. That reduces the cylinder wall's "shrouding" effect
common to valves that open move more parallel to the cylinder axis.
Again, this is good for flow, and useful even for hot street cars.
The one bad thing is that a high-compression hemi needs a very tall
piston dome. The combustion flame has to travel around this dome,
which apparently is not desirable for uniform burning and detonation
resistance. That bad attribute is minimized in supercharged hemis,
where a desirable flatter piston is just perfect for providing the
lower compression ratio that a blown engine wants.

Hemi is an engine much less superior to the B16A which itself is less superior to J2Z, which is better then the LS1.
