What's a good way to track how often your cable service goes down.

Sometimes it seems that ATTBI goes down for minutes or seconds on a regular basis, but I can never tell if it's my stuff that crashed somehow, or if the cable actually disconnected. I remember hearing there are ways to track your connectivity. Know how?

Moonbeam the same thing happens to me on my cox.net cable modem isp. I wonder if this is a internet issue or a isp issue. Hmm.

Go to www.dslreports.com, they have all kinds of tools to track your connectivity. You can then print them out and beat your cable company over the head when they say the problem's on your end.

There's a program called ping plotter that'll ping a website and plot the ms time's between hops and some other stuff for any period of time you specify. I believe it is shareware. Not like you'll accomplish much by tracking it, the cable co's generally don't care. At best you'll get a service credit for the time you are down.

I'm trying to find a way to set up a service in XP or Win2k that monitors the connection and then sends a report to event viewer when it goes down.

Still looking though...

Get someone (not me, I'm busy :)) to write a simple program to ping a certain external IP address and to request a page from some server. Depending on the outcome, your Cable connection would be considered to be working or not working. The program would log the time of the connection-sucks, then it would log the time of connection-works. About 10 minutes to do in Visual Basic.

For me, It always goes down between 15 minutes and 2 hours at a time. About once or twice a week. Then when you call them they say

"We'll can have a tech come out next Friday"

And I'll say

"I'm out, my Tv is out and 2 of my neighbors are out so it's not me. "

Then they say

"We can have a tech come out next Friday"

Then I hang up.

I don't think it's this bad everywhere though.
