Whats a good way to learn Operating Systems?

I use Windows but I would like to learn more about other operating systems like Linux and the Mac OS. What will be a good way to learn about them?

For test driving Linux distros, I really like using this tool:

You can even set a file size for saving persistent changes in step 4. (its only 4GB max, but quite a enough for installing updates and even something like the Steam Client (for streaming games)).

I have pretty much every OS for Windows from 95 on up and 2 Mac OS and I install Linux Distos when I want to see them and learn from them. I use VMWare since ver 5 or 6 and now using ver 12. I have setup some Windows servers using a domain when I was learning how the servers worked for my certs. I love VMWare as I can not mess up my own computer and can run multiple os at the same time.
