what's a good way to get my foot in the door with HDR?

I've looked at some of these pics on Flickr and I really want to make pics that look like that too! Whenever I look at them, I can't help but think "that's exactly how I remember the scene"
example
No matter how you set up a single exposure, there's always one part that comes out slightly over or under-exposed.

I've taken a look at photomatrix. Any other worthwhile programs out there?
I'm all ears to anyone who has any experience with this stuff.

For more examples, check out my co-worker's site Phreakmonkey Same application, photomatrix. The shots are intermixed with HDR and non-HDR. He uses +/- 2 and adjusts accordingly.

Example This shot is HDR, but mildly. HDR was used to show the detail in the wing that would not show with normal exposure ranges.

He also has some really abstract art and great exploration stuff to inspiration.
