Basically, is there any way to free up more RAM during normal usage (ie, Windows XP Pro, using AIM, Firefox, etc)??

I know background apps like AlienGUIse and certain programs that run in the system tray use memory, but is there any easy way to free up more?

You dont want to "free up" ram. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. You want the most info in RAM as possible. The system will page out data that isnt being used and put in fresh data as needed. So in short. Dont waste your time, RAM boosting programs just waste memory and cpu cycles to run.

Remove unwanted items from MSCONFIG's startup list and windows' Services. Windows will automatically manage RAM.

if you don't want to "nuke" a program to free up some ram, minimaze the application/s.

What you really mean is free up RAM from apps that do not release it after use, like winrar or Nero loading a big bin file, or an anti virus scan that puts all the defs in memory.

For that BySoft FreeRam (freeware) is the best, that will free up your RAM to a desired level automatically in background, or manually.
Watching it while it is minimized is quite an education on leaky software.

Well the RAM optimising software I heard would lower the overall performance than it has actually improved cause they forces the loaded RAM to be paged for active programs.

Closing programs is the best and safest way. I won't rely on those RAM optimisizer if I am you.
For example, I can see closing firefox frees up 50MB of RAM
