Basic ACAD can be done on any VGA graphic card. Even minor 3D ACAD works fine on any card.

Architectural CAD work rarely involves advanced 3d usage.

I have used nvdia cards from tnt upwards to a geforce 4ti4200, currently using a geforce 3 as my geforce 4 died :-(. Performance is very good as the opengl drivers are superb. Never used an ati card yet (128mb 9500 on the way) but their drivers are improving in this area according to review on techreport / aceshardware. Answer is in my opinion go for a ti4200 128mb, cheap price good performance.

Note - the above is really only relavant for 3d modelling, as mentioned 2d is less taxing on vid card - more memory would be a better bet.

I have just been doing some modelling of a football pitch + 8 players and the radeon 9500 runs like a dog compared to my geforce 3. I think I will have to pop a 440mx pci in their to get good performance.

Does this guy have some money to pay for a video card? If so, and Nvidia Quadro4 or an ATI FireGL card would suit him best. Lots of 3D rendering power, but it will also do a good job with games.
