What kind of CPU?

Retail = 3 year warranty from MANUFACTURER. Therefore, it shouldn't matter who, just cheap. ;)

OEM = Warranty period established and upheld by dealer, so you would want to look for the lowest price while still maintaining a decent warranty period.

Of course, one would hope you would never NEED a warranty on a CPU. I've NEVER had a CPU die on me personally, but it DOES happen. I see it multiple times every day and although most failures are user error related, at least you can get a dead CPU exchanged IF it's under warranty.

I've seen CPUs die but it's usually followed with one of the following phrases:

"What's a heatsink?"
"Little tube of paste? I tossed it"
"Is it ok if it goes crunch?"
"Lift what lever?"
"You mean the pins HAVE to line up?"
"If 1.7v is ok, then 2.2v must be better right?"

Seriously.

I like MWave a lot because their prices are very competitive ones you factor in shipping. Also consider going with the company jonnyGURU works for. If you plan on overclocking, avoid getting a CPU from a company that sells "Guranteed to overclock" chips since the choice chips have already been picked out. Consider contacting Compuwiz1 if you want a highly overclockable CPU.

...right Windogg, but I've found that even the most likeable, seemingly capable individuals still do some strange things to CPUs and end up killing them.

What's a guy to do? ;)

check on pricewatch.comfor the lowest prices. The vendor really doesn't matter that much. If a cpu is gonna die it's gonna die no matter who you got it from.

techmaster: That's completely inaccurate UNLESS you are talking about Retail boxed CPUs.

Some of these real cheap places on Pricewatch sell OEM processors with only a 15 day processor.

Pricewatch is also a haven for theives and dishonest dealers that lowball you on the processor and then rape you on shipping. Sure they'll sell you a 1Ghz T-Bird for $199 but then charge you $60 for UPS Ground.

This is just me, but since i live in a large city I get my CPU's from a local shop (prices are similar to pricewatch)...but when I buy over the net I always buy from large vendors (big names) so that I know they will be around when I need them. If it is some two-bit operation with a crappy web page, but low prices, I keep on moving...

I NEVER buy 15-day CPU's or even 30 day CPU's. Why not pay a few bucks more and get a full 3-year boxed version? I guess it is just how cheap (or poor) you are.

It is a strategy that has worked for me for years now...never had a problem.

Windogg,

You are right...

A good friend of mine, and a member of AT, didn't seat a peltier on his 600mhz well enough. After a bit of OCing, he couldnt figure out what was wrong with his box, so he checked MBM and it read his CPU temp at 220F. His CPU was doing an impression of a lightbulb... the bastard then tried to sell his burnt up CPU to me... what a friend!

If you plan to run your CPU stock, I don't think it matters much where you get it from. I'd look for quality if you plan on OCing, and for that I'd get it from manufacturer.
