What's a good vacation spot

I really like the coastal edge of Alabama. It's quiet, not touristy at all, and the sand is sugar white. It's a nice alternative to Destin or any other touristy place on the panhandle of Florida. It's a lot cheapter too. Unfortunately, there's not much else there besides beaches.

Mobile is the biggest city there, but my family stayed in Orange Beach. Without a doubt, part of the best vacation I've ever taken (we went to Orange Beach, New Orleans, and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics in one huge, roundabout road trip beginning from Birmingham, AL).

EDIT: this is where we stayed. Man, what an awesome place.

You're right - it's very nice. There are a bunch of condos on the edge of it and Florida. In the winter though (dead of winter) it won't be warm enough to comfortably sun tan, though going as late as november you may be able to squeeze some in or wait until march. There is outlet shopping pretty close but otherwise not a heck of a lot I think, other than little theme parks on the road in Destin (fairly close) and places like that.

Plus you might even run into the skoorbs! What a treat.

Budget would be helpful. And what types of things would the non-beach-going partner be interested in?

The Conch Republic: Key West. Waaaaaarm, you can stand on the southern most point and pretend you can see Cuba! Too far away from civilization for the yuppies to have taken over, Key West retains enough gritty/funky realness that you can slide down the side streets and not feel like a fvcking tourist.

It's small enough that you can bike around the whole town. While there once, I got into a no cover charge, unannounced but full up performance by Jimmy Buffet in the relatively tiny outdoor garden of an off the main street local's bar 'cause the guy manning the gate said, "I can tell you're a local." Say no more!

Prowl the off streets for cheap, down home Cuban restaurants.

God Bless the Conch Republic! :D

Florence

probably my favorite city in the world. there are plenty of non-touristy spots, and it's a great place to just get away and relax.

Been there, not much to do there. Myrtle beach is not too far though.

http://www.firenze.net/ ;) tons of museums and stuff, but my favorite thing to do was just sit in a cafe and chill.

only spent 2 days there (in the midst of a month-long Europe trip), but it was a nice break from the overwhelming tourism of the "major" cities (London, Paris, Monaco, Rome). I was also a big fan of Assisi for the same reason.

The Turkish Riveira is nice. The area between Alanya and Kemer.
Very nice weather, relativity cheap and lots of Greek antiquities. Often less touristic and in better state than in Greece itself. :)
