I was in your boat and did a ton of research at the AVSforum reading piles and piles of posts and recommendations. In the end, I eventually upped my budget a bit from 200, and got the Bic Acoustech H-100 per everyones recommendations that it is the best sounding sub under 350 dollars by a long shot. The H-100 can be found for 249 shipped though which is outside your budget, but everything I have read says that stretch will make a huge difference. I ordered mine today, so I cant really give any firsthand experience, but every thread where someones budget is in the 200-300 dollar range has half the responses suggesting it.

To stay under 200 ($196 shipped), I dont think you will be able to beat this guy though http://www.amazon.com/JBL-SUB1...&qid=1201306480&sr=8-1

Another good option is the Klipsch KSW-10 which is in the Costco coupon book for 150+Tax starting February 18th, and I haven't seen that sub under 300 anywhere else. Word is that it will be cleaner sounding than the JBL Venue, although significantly less powerful.

Oh yeah, I forgot the X-Sub. Also a very good choice in your range and cheaper than the Bic H-100.

On the Craigsub rankings at the AVSforum, the X-Sub and BIC H-100 are the 2 cheapest subs that even make the list (75 rating is the minimum he considers a sub having a positive impact on a system). Both the H-100 and X-Sub get a 78, with the Bic winning for Home Theater use and the X-Sub for music use.

People on AVSforum tend to bash the Dayton Sub12 (they like the Dayton HSU's), but Anandtech people seem to like it. However you have to take AVSForum peoples statements with a grain of salt because if they had their way, everyone would be able spend about 25K on their home theaters minimum.

link fixed. The Dayton is an entry level subwoofer, so it slips under the radar of AVS where the Rocket Tyke and now X-sub are the entry level.

If you look, he doesn't really consider the Tyke entry level as it passes well under his 75 pt minimum at 60. He recommends it at best to augment a small component 2.0 system to add a little kick. The X-Sub and H-100 are his entry level considerations.

Still I would love to find out where the Dayon Sub12 fits on his list, because it is a bit ridiculous to not test any subs between the Tyke and the X-Sub

p.s. I have no idea how the v from avsfroum got taken out of my link, thats really weird, thanks for the heads up, because it was working last night
