What's a good sub $100 printer?

We need a printer that is durable and doesn't kill us every time it's time for ink, and we have $100 American or less to buy one.....suggestions?

if you don't need color, you should really try to find a cheap laser printer. otherwise, most inexpensive printers go through ink extremely fast, which i found out the hard way. if you need color, find a printer you like, and check the price of replacement cartridges. remanufactured cartridges should be in your mind as well. good luck

HP Deskjet 5550 should be around $99 these days. Good quality general prints, great pictures, and reasonable cartridges. Check it out.

canon i550 w/ $1.70 generic cartridge (uses 4 cartridges). very high quality for its price. HP/Lexmark will eat you alive in cartridge costs.

Use the i550 myself as 1 of my Printers and very pleased...

The Canon i550 is a great printer by all accounts. Great quality and relatively cheap/easy to refill.

Another vote for the i550. Ink costs, performance, and quality are all top notch.

i've had a few printers, and i am very happy with epson's line. inexpensive to refill is what attracted me most, but print quality is good too.

Only buy manufacturers carts not the cheap ones, the manufacturers carts all have patented parts that the cheaper carts cant replicate. I used cheap carts on my Canon S300, after doing so the printer made much louder noises when printing, print quality went down, and the cheap carts screwed up the print head, I ended up throwing the printer out.

Can you care to explain what you're talking about? For i550 or i850, it's a piece of plastic container with ink. It's simpler than a $0.10 pen. The printhead is seperate from the cartridge and can be replaced. As long as you use quality paper, the print quality is not affected noticebly. It sounds like you used some crappy cartridges (there is a varying degree of quality even in generic brands). I've always used generic cartridges for years with other ink jets as well.

I've usec generic inks before. The quality on almost all of them has never been as good as the manufacturer cartridge. I use good quality paper. Printing with the manufacturer cartridges gives me great results. With generic cartridges, text has little jagged corners and the letters are just not as sharp as with the original stuff.

GET THE EPSON C82, YOU WILL NOT FIND A BETTER PRINTER FOR THE PRICE. In fact, it will be hard to find a better printer for more than $100. Check out the resolutions on the c82, best around.

Used to be. Canon's latest also come down to 2 picoliters per drop, 4800x1200 dpi resolution. And that without the delicate and clog-prone piezo heads, all-separate, inexpensive, not-patent-protected ink cartridges.

I've had two friends lately who have had their Epson printers die on them. I've recommended Canon printers for years. They finally listened and couldn't be happier. I've got a Canon S750 myself, and although its not top of the line, its a great printer....

I really can't recommend Epson. Though I've never bought a "high end" model from them, I've seen many die:

2 Stylus Color 400s
1 Stylus Color 600
1 Stylus Color 740 on its last legs

The Color 400s both used Epson branded carts the others generics after the first. I would go for the Canon. There is a nice deal on the i850 in Hot Deals for $120 or so.
