I stumble on this site recently looking for a good stereo system. It is a very good site with lot and lot of reviews of audio and video stuff. They recommend a Denon Dmc 3 which goes for around $300. This includes 2 speakers from Mission, made by a respected British company.

That denon mini-system is the only mini-system that I would recommend.

I agree with a lot of these people. I think that the best thing that you could do would be to buy a "cheap" Dolby Digital Receiver. I recommend spending some time at ubid.com. They have great deals on refurbished recievers there. I own a Denon AVR-65 Receiver that I got for $169 + shipping. It sounds great for a student with at budget.

My father has a good paradigm speaker setup. I highly recommend that brand. Buy two bookshelf speakers that'll sound like angels from heaven, and later as your needs and abilities arise, you can add a center channel and some big @ss fronts.

Ok, it boils down to this:
Grab a set of PSB Alphas for the center and mains.
Grab a set of the PSB Ambients for the surrounds.
Have a custom subwoofer built.
Use at least 2 18's or 4 12's.
Use a box the size of a full size fridge.
Buy a receiver with features you like.
