To really test the highest-frequency ranges:

Marilyn Manson, Mechanical Animals: Mechanical Animals

Towards the very end of the song, some amazing strings just drop right out of the sky. Very few speakers can handle this properly, though most headphones can. If you cannot hear those 19+KHz frequencies resonating in the very back of your ears, you're not experiencing it. To be sure, just test against headphones. And get a very high-quality MP3, 192+Kbps to prevent the high-frequency cutoff.

Check out "The Barbaian Horde" off of the Gladiator soundtrack.

Get highs and lows, soft and loud, all in one song :)

Specifically, "Dreaming Tree" from Dave Matthews Band (Before These Crowded Streets). That song is a work of ART, and EXTREMELY clear to test your system.

Everyone just keeps listing their favorite songs.... 3/4 of these songs dont test the full range of sound very well. I also have to say Dave Matthews..... quite a range of sounds and they are all very crisp and clean. And pretty much all his songs would do.

Great thread. I will have to revisit it on Saturday and download some of the tunes mentioned I don't already have. Here a few, I like all music but rap:

Lipps Inc. - Funky Town (sounds great cranked up)
Pearl Jam - Rearviewmirror
B52's - Bushfire
Anything AC/DC - Shook Me All Night Long
Chuck Mangione - Feel So Good (don't laugh, crank it up and add some visuals that go along with the music)

I could go on forever.

Yanni and Opeth are both good testers. Check out Apostle in Triumph by Opeth and you won't be sorry.

IMO I think techno is very good for showing speakers off.

Ayla - Part 1,2,&3 all kick a$$.
Ayla - Dreamland
Antiloop - Autoload
Lots of other good Antiloop also.

Autoload is one of my favorties of all my mp3's.
