What's a good small 10" or eee PC sized lappy with SATA?

We were getting ready to buy the ASUS EEE 4G-X (japanese version), but it only has 4GB.

She is looking for a portable for travel (esp abroad) to basically check email / web without being stuck on a phone or larger laptop.

About 10" is the size she likes 🙂, I have a Dell D400 that's still a little big for her needs.

Budget is open to what laptops cost. We were going to upgrade her 14.1" machine this year to a better desktop replacement, but she's ok with the performance and would rather have an ultra compact. She must have a true Japanese keyboard though...

Thanks

hmm well basically all laptops these days come with sata hard drives instead of ide.
that 4gb version uses ssd as storage. so basically just get one of those netbooks with like 160gb in the description. ssd in netbooks only go up to 12 or 16gb i think

if you want a list of options you can look at my thread here http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2162905&enterthread=y

not offhand. you'd have to look for them in that market. i'd suspect that it would not be too difficult though. just google some of those companies and bring up their website for that region.

that's the problem though...most won't sell a japanese equiped machine in the US any more and most overseas companies won't ship.

beNippon.com is carrying japanese laptops, but not the ultra compacts.

Apple used to let you order as well as Sony with this region...they don't anymore.

The stickers some have say are 'just as good' really aren't as there are more keys and a slightly different layout than a US / European setup.

oh i thought you were living there.. how about a relative? family member or friend? have them buy it for you and ship it over

We had thought of that too, but making a larger purchase and having them trusted to ship it properly is a bit hard. It's easier and much cheaper to ship to Japan than back.

oh i agree with that.. except you mentioned most dont do that anymore 😛

is there a place like best buy/ circuit city where you could order online and have someone pick it up at the store? there has to be a trusty uncle or someone who could mail it to you

The thing is trusting them to pack it right, not getting hit with customs, and it's expensive to ship out of Japan to the US.

This is why I was looking for someone that knows about these machines.

I can google just fine, it's finding a japanese model here in the US that is difficult now.

but buying something from an import store would be pretty costly as well.. wouldnt it? (granted i know nothing about buying imported stuff lol). i'd think since those netbooks are pretty cheap that its not very cost effective for them to import them. if they mark the price up too much people wouldnt be interested.
i guess maybe some other extreme is buy one in the U.S, replace the keyboard with a japanese one, install japanese o.s and drivers from their website? thats all i can think of
