Going to present as a gift to a friends father in the Dominican Republic. Don't want something that he could easily get there. He is a huge rum fan. I figure my budget is ~$50. Few dollars more is OK, but I don't want to spend any more than that.

I don't know anything about alcohol. I was hoping to get him a bottle of Hennessy White, but he doesn't drink the stuff. He usually deals with Brugal or Bacardi.

If you're planning on shipping it you might want to check how much it will cost, was going to send some local wine down to a friend in Australia and found out it would be nearly $100 just for shipping...

And not that I have any first hand knowledge of these but 10 Best American Rums

The Caribbean is known for their Rum and he can probably easily get any Rum from the islands. I haven't been to the Domican Republic, but its slightly possible they don't carry a lot of rums from central America.

A couple of hard to find, but good ones would be Ron Centario from Costa Rica 12+ years old.

and Flor de Cana from Nicaragua

There is also the Bermuda rum "Goslings Family Reserve "thats vey good and fairly hard to get as there are limited quantities:

Find some good moonshine (the real stuff). I think something uniquely American like Jack Daniels would go over better than sending rum. He probably already has access to top notch rum.

My favorite rum that I can find in most stores is Flor De Cana from Nicaragua. Smooth enough to be sipped with some ice. I would never mix it with coke etc... You can taste the sugarcane used in its manufacture. The 7 and the 12 year are my favorites. The older varities are supposed to be even better but I never tried them.

I'm going to pack it in my luggage and take it there in person.

That sounds awesome. I hate rum and I think I'd like this.

I hated rum as well because all of the rum commonly found in the USA sucks. The only representation of Rum I had was bacardi and Capt morgan which are both horse shit. I'm not a fan of sweet drinks for the most part so I dont really like rum and coke either. But then I visited Domenican Republic and tried real rum like Brugal extra viejo and other rums. Rums that are smooth and tasty enough to be sipped with just a little ice. The difference is night and day.

I'm the only rum drinker in my group of drinking buddies. Most of the guys I hang with prefer scotch, bourbon or cognac either straight or on the rocks and good rum can hang with any good sipping spirit. Flor de cana is my favorite and has been for years. Get the 7 year for a non-expensive bottle of everyday drink. Get the 12 year or older for a gift.

You should bring a bottle of bourbon or something that is unique to the USA. Bringing Rum to the carribean makes no sense.

Would you bring cigars from here to cuba? Kimchi to korea?

He doesn't enjoy other liquors. It'll stay on his shelf as a decoration. I'd rather get him something he will enjoy and pop open right away. ^_^

I dont get it... looking for a good rum from the US to bring to a guy living in the Caribbean is like looking for a good cigar from Iceland to bring to a guy living in Cuba.

Be careful taking this onboard with you on your flight

From the TSA site

Alcoholic Beverages

Traveling with Special Items

Travelers may now carry through security checkpoints travel-size toiletries (3 ounces or less) that fit comfortably in ONE, QUART-SIZE, clear plastic, zip-top bag.
With the exception of medications, any amount of liquid including alcohol greater than three ounces must be packed in your checked baggage.
Liquids, including alcohol purchased after clearing the security checkpoint are permitted aboard aircraft.

Carrying Alcohol in Your Checked Baggage

Please note, you can’t take alcoholic beverages with more than 70% alcohol content (140 proof), including 95% grain alcohol and 150 proof rum, in your checked luggage.
You may take up to five liters of alcohol with alcohol content between 24% and 70% per person as checked luggage if it’s packaged in a sealable bottle or flask.
Alcoholic beverages with less than 24% alcohol content are not subject to hazardous materials regulations.

So it looks like it must be put in your checked bags. Hopefully it won't get crushed by the baggage handling gorillas.

I'd say bring the guy some flor de cana. Domenicans love their rum and with their love for Brugal, there is not much need or demand for other countries' rums. Maybe he has never seen or heard of flor de cana. More rum is not necessarily a bad thing...

Yeah, it'll be in checked bags. I've had no issues on previous flights.

You are giving someone from the DR rum? Eh I would probably go with something that isn't going to be worse than what is readily available in his country.

It would be like racking a fat rail of nose-candy that was purchased on a corner in LA, trying to impress your visiting Peruvian friend.

Sand to the beach, etc etc

I'm from Oregon; we have some of the best pinot noir in the world. If someone was visiting me from, say, Kentucky, and they brought me some fine Kentucky bourbon, that would be a good gift. If they showed up and said, "Hey, I know you've got great wine out here, but just try this Kentucky pinot noir!" I'd think they were a massive idiot. Importing American rum INTO the Dominican Republic is on that level. It makes no sense. What about some nice wine instead?
