I've been wanting to install a remote starter that also serves to lock and unlock the doors. I have automatic door locks so I don't need to open up my door panels. I was looking at a couple on ebay. Are they all pretty much the same. I remember when I had my old Saturn I had one from a company named DesignTech (autocommand) it was a real nice one but I had this annoying anntena up on my windshield.

Get one with a 1 mile range...mine has the 1,000 ft range and there's gotta be a case for false advertising here. With new batteries on a clear day with no physical obstructions I'm lucky if it works from a couple hundred feet.

1 mile range??? Jeebus....that is a pretty long range. That must use radio frequency or something....

I'm guessing the 1 mile range ones probably work from about 1,000 feet since that's about 5x the range of my 1,000 foot one that really only works from 200 feet.

Did you think they were using infrared?

You probably never mounted the antenna properly. My old remote starter from Designtech was around a couple hundren feet. I would start the car from bed.

It doesn't matter. To have 1 mi range with any type of signal would require so much power! I am guessing that if it did have that range that either the remote would drain everyday or the car would come so close to draining its battery just before starting up.

I had a Viper installed. Have been pleased with it but the range went down after the first year or so. I probably need a new battery in the fob. But when it was new it worked from more than a couple blocks away.
