Mine currently runs about 27ºC with retail HSF. I used to worry about anything above 40ºC

depends on the CPU, normally Durons and Tbirds run hotter than their Intel brethren

I do know that my Duron 800 runs around 35-40 degrees C

It totally depends on the CPU and how you define "normal". For an Intel P3 cpu the max (according to Intel) is about 85°C. Under load (running SETI@Home or Q3A) the max temp should be WELL under 85°C. Most of the overclocked systems I build run about 60-70°C under load with Intel CPU's.

Athlons are totally different. They run MUCH hotter and require greater care in monitoring because the cpu does NOT have an internal thermistor diode (sans palomino).

Depends on the CPU.

My Athlon runs 115F w/o case fans, 100F w/ case fans (see "Ashram" in my sig link for explanation, 73F room temp). My 500K6-2 never went below 120F, 300M2 never went below 140F. Also it depends on the motherboard, some read higher than others because of sensor positioning.
