lots of messages on psu at hardforum

recommended list I've seen...

Antec
Enermax
Fortron
OCZ
PC Power & Cooling
Coolermaster
Sparkle
Seasonic
Vantec
Zalman
Tagan
Zippy/Emacs
Silverstone

Me, I'd try to get at least 420 or 430 watts. In some rare cases, some motherboards are very power hungry or defective (whatever), anyway and require around 480 watts.

So, if you have a favorite place to shop, it's easy to narrow down the list. Only look at those with at least 400 watts, are in a certain price range and are on the list. Have fun. :)

Get a Fortron. Like THIS. Of course, would help if we knew the rigs spec's to beter assess how many watts you need.

Seasonic S-12 330W if it's for a office pc, most quiet active cooled PSU.

It looks like those fortrons aren't very energy efficient, the difference between that (65%) and an 80 Plus certified (typically 85%) is $10 a month at least if the machine's on 24/7. And all the 80 Plus ones out now are reliable and quiet.

Check out a CoolMax. I have three of 'em. They're cool, quiet, and have never caused me any problems (OC'ing or not). You can pick a nice one up at buy.com for less than $50, with free shipping.

Thanks for the suggestions...I'm running a Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP-939 board with an AMD 3500+. 512 ram, GeForce 5200 video card, 2 80 gig 7200 rpm WD hd's, and a Sony DRU-500 DVD burner. It's my office pc...not many frills in it. :)

What I run at home are Antec True Power...got a 550W in my personal pc and a 480w in my server. Just didn't want to spend that kind of money for my office pc. But didn't want to get a cheap piece of junk either...trying to balance it out.
