whats a good printer for pics?

im looking for a good printer to print some pics from my digital camera. i am out looking at some at the store but on normal paper it is sometimes a little hard to see the quality. thanks for the help.

Inkjet? Color laser? Dye sublimation? Dot matrix? Memory card slot in printer? Price range? It'll be easier if we know this stuff. 🙂

well lets start off with under $200, i all so want it to be able to do normal printing so i can use it for classes and work. i was thinking ink jet printers as i really want them to print pics from my 2.0mp camera. i work with computers and such all day so im looking for a more personal feel of the printers. i want to get one that produces good pictures but doenst cost to much. thanks

I have an Epson 780 that prints 8 x 10's just fine. Suitable for framing and hanging on the wall. Cost for the printer? About $100.00.

My C82 does a damn fine job. it is only $100 (i got mine for 80 with a 80 rebate from bb) and ink = cheap but brite

all photo printers sucks...total waste of money...it's best if u go to costco and just let them print out digital photos for you.......they look EXACTLY like photos from processed film..

my boss bought the most expensive hp photo printer and even though from far away it looks real..if u look closely, u can still see the small dots and stuff u see normally from an inkjet printer...so that sucks....

Getting it done at your pharmacy/etc. is a good idea but if you want a home printer the best you can do is Canon's.. Good print quality and cheap price per page.. My brother in laws new HP Photo printer is awesome though.. really pricey printer and inks though..

I was going to suggest the Canon i950 until I saw your budget... maybe one of the other lower end Canon i-series would better suite your price range.

The HP DeskJet 5550 and the HP PhotoSmart 7150 are the exact same printer, save for some external features. Of the two, go for the 5550. Epson is always a great bargain choice, but their ink costs are insane. Not to mention totally unrefillable thanks to the damn embedded chip inside each cartridge.

The Canon i-Series are the way to go. The i550, i850 and i950 are 4800 dpi printers with a 2 picoliter drop size, lower than what any other manufacturer has got. Cheapest ink around too, though it has a tendency to dry out. I'd go with the i850 if at all possible. 🙂

Spring for the extra fifty bucks or so. I just bought one last week, and the prints are remarkable. Remember too that the Canon has separate cartridges, so you only have to replace the ones that are running low. That makes it a very economical printer to use. Also, photo print times are the best out there.

That's actually not much of a feature, rather gimmicky even. Unless you print out a hell of a lot of red letterheads or something, your coloured inks are going to run down fairly evenly. But they're still great printers.

The HP 5550 is a nice printer and the Canon i850 too. They're both well under $200 and they print real nice pictures.

Actually, you go through 2 or 3 magenta and cyan cartridges for some of the other ones. They do not go evenly. Hey man, I did my homework 😀

Another vote for the Canon i550 series. Great photos and dirt cheap cartridges. Take that, Walmart photo processing center...damned smiling face...why I oughta...grr....grrr. Anyway, the lower end Canon's are good unless you're running Linux or something.

i still can't believe u guys will shell out money on those stupid photoprinters.........if u look closesr, u can see the ink dots ......just go to ur local digital photo processing place....coscto or wallmart.....the pictures are perfect..flawless.......unless they can come up w/ those kinds of printers.....i'm not buying one

i use a 7350 and i love it.

very nice printer.

but if i need mass printings, i go down to walmart and get em 29 cents a photo. cheaper. reasonable quality. matte finish.

or if i need em huge, i go down to kinkos. still fairly cheap. good quality.

not at all true. the deskjet5550 is not a photo printer. it has a lower resolution.. cartridges are less expensive per capita. 4x the ink per cartridge.

if you want 6 color printing, go with the 7150-7550. if you want to spend 200 bucks, the 7550 can be had, and it's a godly printer. beleive me.

Can anyone tell me if the Canon i950 has the print head built in to the cartridge...or the carriage?

I have an old dead Epson in the basement (I don't remember the model #)and the mfg. technology is such that it had the print head(s) built in to the carriage. Meaning, when you replaced the ink, that's all you were doing was replacing the ink. With the print head built in to the carriage and not the cartridge, it's the same old print head for the life of the printer, and over time, the print head will wear out, which means the printer is dead. It would cost more to have a repair shop replace the print head than to just buy a new printer. But with the print head built in to (onto the bottom of) the ink cartridge, you get a new print head every time you replace the cartridge.

fool i work at officemax we print good samples from the printers all the time.... tell your boss to stop printing on 20-24lb regular printer paper that is like 90 bright
we have photoprinters there (basically most printers can now do photos)

the only reason u can see ink dots is if your using cheap paper(not photo paper) or not print on high enough res.....or your stupid and try and make a small pictures to big (ie trying to take a 800x600 pic and print it in 4x6)

using photo paper and printing on hi res u can do a pretty damn good job

of course its going to be more expensive buying photo paper and ink than it is to get them done at costco or walmart

Thats a negative. You may think that but it's because you obviously don't use a canon. My magenta always runs out before anything else. Yellow next. A gimmick it is *not*.

As for what printer you should use go with a canon i850. Much less than the 950 and prints just as good but a tiny bit slower. Borderless 8x10's and 4x6's with great text to boot. This is coming from someone who used to run an HP for all my photos but switched. I love my i850.

Forget it...I answered my own question by doing a little searching.

Here's a great review of the i950

LINK

And I actually linked above to the 2nd page of the review that shows the carts and user replaceable print head.

Very impressive! I remember back in the day when a 6 picoliter ink droplet was impressive. I need to get to a computer store and see the output from one of these... but I can imagine that it's quite remarkable.

So the difference between the i850 and i950 (besides price) is that there are two more ink color tanks on the i950.

So my next question...does anyone think that it is a noticeable upgrade/difference with an average set of eyes looking at the output between the two... with the i950 having two more color carts?
