Also found a new hercules prophet 9800 pro going at 150 right now, but on ebay. probably will go up some before bidding ends. Is this a good card?

Thats a good price for the MSI, as it comes with an R360 core and several games. For a standalone card, $175 or so is a good price.

Do you know a place where i can get one for 175? I tried staples, office deopt, newegg, pricewatch, etc and didn't see one that cheap. Thanks.

Overclocking, modding, etc are not my specialty. I was hoping to get one that i could simply stick on the motherboard and let it rip. Also, since $ is an issue, I can't spend over 200. I looked at the hot deals section and didn't see one for this card. Crucial refurb is around 200 which seems overpriced considering a new one is the same price no?

I second the vote for the MSI card. Huge bundle of software, great stock heatsink, EASILY OC'd using ATItool to XT speeds.

I have the Hercules Prohphet 9800 Pro right now and it's great. Easy install and no problems at all (use ATi drivers instead of the ones provided by Hercules). I paid $180 shipped for it through overstock.com a little over a month ago. No regrets. For $150, that's a very good price. The Prophet's kinda neat too with the blue PCB and the blue heat sink fan. In my opinion, it's a solid card with a solid build. Plus, Hercules has been around for a long time.

Aside from that, Frys (outpost.com) and Best Buys will every now and again sell it for ~ $175 (sometimes it involves a MIR, sometimes not).

If I didn't already have this Hercules Prophet, I would definitely get the MSI with the r360 core. Many people are flashing it to a 9800XT.

My bad luck - they're located in cali so I gotta pay 13 in tax, or 206 total. I'll check out fry's - that was a good idea. They may have a special going. If it's the same price as msi, i'll get msi.

I think with the recent announcement (kinda) of the new NVidia 6600 series, these 9800Pro's are really gonna start dropping in price!

Is there a big difference in performance out of the box between msi, hercules, ati, etc?

I don't think so. I think the main differences are the stock heatsink and the software bundles. Also, if you plan to OC than getting the R360 core is key, MSI pretty much takes the cake then.

They are now clearly label "Atlantis" cards and are built by sapphire. He doesn't have to worry about crippled versions from these companies. By the way, i have a 9700 non pro and it runs doom 3 at medium setting at 1024x786 like a charm. I would recommend a 9700pro for 130 if you would like to save some money.

EDIT: Get the MSI

Just bought msi 9800pro from newegg since they ship fast and i've never had a problem w/ an order. It was the same price 193. Thanks.

Now I'm out of the low end video card group to the middle of the pack. I guess new video cards will soon make this low end but hopefully not for a while.

can u spend about $50-60 more? I rather get the vanilla 6800. You get a significant speed boost. Might be able to unlock 4 extra pipes too!

I agree, it's a good price.
they are still selling for $299 (Canadian) at Best Buy..
the 193 equates to just above 250 Cdn.

good deal indeed.
