i would love it is gyms would just let you pay as you go. Like every day I show up at the gym, I paid like $5-7. no contracts, no monthy bank transfers, nothing. I would probably go then. But I cannot see myself joining anything that forces me to sign a contract for any extended lenghth of time.

That would be quite costly if you go 3-4 times a week.

Paying $30 a month is supposed to motivate you because you've already paid...

tried that twice in my life... got sick of the gym after three months on both occasions. but i was so limited in my contract that i could not freeze it without a docs note. now, i dont want to bother signing anything...

and i think that it migght be expensive to pay $15.00 a week, but not as expensive as paying and losing hundreds cause i am forced to sign a contract and stop going.

Local Gold's Gym is $30 a month for me, but I talked them down when they were signing up new people pre-construction last year. I've seen them charge new people up to $40 a month.

As a UTexas Grad, I can pay for memberships by the academic semester, which would work out for you, e.g. I paid $75 for the summer membership (3+ months).

As long as you don't mind the young people, you should try to see if there's something like this for your alma mater or local university.

Also, one of my friends purchased a membership at a community center for 6 months, so that's pretty flexible too if you don't want to commit to something for longer than that.

About a dollar a day for a year contract around here. They have specials sometimes, but not much cheaper. I remember when it used tobe really expensive.

Actually, does anyone know of a decent gym in NYC for a reasonable price? Most of them around here are ~$80/month and have these ridiculous contracts. I was looking at Crunch/Bally's and the contract said something along the lines of requiring a doctor's note or proof that you're moving somewhere that won't have an affiliate gym in order to cancel. If I want to stop, I want to stop without having to give a reason.

My university gym would cost about $40/month, but it gets crowded. My local gyms look sickly.

Really depends on where you live. In my area, it's about $35 a month. In downtown Toronto, all 5 or so clubs that are near there are $70+ a month (and the one my buddy goes to is like $125)
