having just had a baby boy myself, speaking from practical experience i vote for diapers. if you must get clothes, skip right past the 0-3 or newborn clothes and go to 6+ or 12+ months. Formula may vary a bit as the parents try different brands to see what the kid will eat and what the parents like. diapers are always handy. a box of the 1-2 sizes work really well. shoot, you can even use bing cashback, buy from drugstore.com, have it shipped direct, and get 20% cb for later!

failing that, i'd go with the sams club or costco gc. kidsrus is expensive

Baby clothes sized to fit 12 months or more from now. I remember REALLY appreciating pretty new clothes when the baby was a year or two old. Some of the clothes baby gets will get outgrown before it's worn if you get it to fit the new baby, but if it's for when baby gets bigger, it's really appreciated.

This is a good suggestion. Lots of people give clothes for 0-3 months, but it's nice to have some for 3-6, 6-9 and 12 months as well. Be sure to take the seasons into account. If they just had the baby, don't buy 6 month summer clothes as it will be winter when the baby needs 6 month clothes.

Gift cards to places like Babies-R-Us are always useful and appreciated. I would stay away from buying diapers; people generally like a particular brand and if you give them a whole bunch of diapers they could outgrow them before they are used.

the only problem with giving diapers is that parents tend to be picky, or at least we were. we definitely didn't like huggies but we loved pampers.

i'd go with the suggestion of the clothes in the 12 month range or the target/babies r us/etc gift card. they will definitely, definitely, definitely use the gift card at some point.

Yeah, no kidding. My boys were slightly above average size at birth (~8.5lbs each) but grew VERY quickly, and were in 6-9mo clothes within a week or two. We had a ton of 0-3 month clothes that were never worn as a result. Heck, my youngest (5yo) hasn't stopped growing quickly, and is bigger than his 9 year old brother.
