Arts and crafts stuff, GBA game if she's got one, if she's into reading you could get a book or two. A subscription to Nat'l Geographic Kids would probably be pretty good too.

8 year old girl: books, arts/crafts supplies/kits, those new Lego kits aimed at girls, gift cards, pretty clothes (if you know her size/tastes.) Ask her parents for ideas, they will have specific suggestions based on what she likes.

Not necessarily. Some like Polly Pocket and hate Bratz, and some don't like either. It's best to ask the girl's parents what she likes or wants.
