What's a good photo printer and do most have those smardcard slot?

Hey, I have been behind a rock in regards to digital cameras and printers, but I saw one today that has a slot on top where you take the card out of your camera, plug it in, and it will print the photos without even using the computer...pretty sweet 🙂 Anyway, do most companies make them like this nowadays, and do you have any recommendations?

I REALLY love my Epson 870 photo printer. I get rave reviews from others that see my pictures, and I've not shot a single picture on film since getting this printer. They have a model 875DC that has a PCMCIA slot in it for direct load, but doing that doesn't let you edit or crop your pictures. That's half the beauty of going digital - you're the darkroom!

Thanks for the response...I'll look into the Epson 870 🙂 I have been using an Epson 800 for almost 2 years now, and I am totally impressed with the Epson quality...I saw a black HP photo printer that looked sweet, too, so I'll have to shop these around I guess...

I've got an HP970Cxi and it prints phenomenal pictures as well.

With the proper print drivers (Photoshop 6.0 print drivers are no good for me), the pictures on glossy paper are indistinguishable from lab photos. In fact, the print pictures look better than pictures developed from Advantix photos.

nice 🙂 ...and how many clams should I expect to fork out for one of these bad boys? 🙂 ...looking for some deals now, but to no avail

The Epson Stylus 870, as stated above, is a GREAT photo printer... Very smooth, exceptional quality. It will give better prints than most need in a lifetime. Epson really does make some of the best photo printers.

Canon has a couple of models that are good for photos, but are aweful for anything else. If you can wait the generation of Canon printers should give Epson a run for their money.

As far as HP printers go.... They have some decent ones, but really they just don't perform on the price/performance level of epson. Epson is also offering archival quality pigment-based inks and paper now. 6 color printing also makes for a noticable better print. HP loves to claim that their printers are specially designed to put down more ink down and somehow that makes for a better picture? It doesn't mater how much ink is layed down if the blending and color management is 2nd rate. Needless to say I am not a fan of HP photo printing. But I won't go so far as to say they are bad printers, they aren't... They certainly have good avaibility. Others may have different experiences wth HP's, this is mine.

My vote would be for an Epson 870, or for larger format the 1270 (like 11x14 photos). The 1270 and 870 are identical, but with different paper handling.... If you want to save a bit of money you could go for the predecessor of the 1270 and 870: the Stylus EX....It has most of the same features, but you could probably find it on e Bay...

Good luck.

..and on the issue of the smartcard reader... I know that some of the canon models were coming with readers....
