What's a good pellet gun?

Hah, thought there might be some enthusiasts here. Airsoft is a lot of fun, but I need something to take out a 'my excellent compatriot.

this one looks good: Text

Maybe he wants to get a beaver pissed off at him. Nothing like being attacked by an angry beaver.

You ain't takin' out any god danged 'my excellent compatriot with a pellet gun! Seriously though don't hope to kill a racoon, or anything short of a songbird with a pellet gun. Even the bigger .22 calibre ones don't do squat, get yourself a small rifle... that uses gunpowder, a .22 calibre Browning would do the trick.

Benjamin is nice.
I still remember my first shot with one about 15 years ago at a new metal shed in my backyard with 15 pumps, it went through the front and back with good size holes. My mom was not happy 🙂

some reviews

I've borrowed this pellet gun from my brother in law. It is definitely an accurate pellet gun . .20 caliber pellets have some good stopping power too.

ANSCHÜTZ is the best brand of precision air rifles. I bought mine for near $1500. These are Olypmic quality air rifles, not some cheap toy. I won multiple Colorado state air rifle championships in multiple catagories with it for 7 years running before I quit last year. It doesnt sound like you are into the competitive thing like I was, so I doubt you need anything quite that nice, but that is considered the best brand.

Will a BB/pellet gun be enough for a racoon? Their skulls might be too thick for a pellet to get through. We had a big possum out here that kept causing problems, and a BB literally bounced off its head. A 22 was needed to take care of it.

Pcnerd, I don't need something quite that nice, but I appreciate the information.

Jeff, I prob. won't end up catching the 'my excellent compatriot anyhow, I just hear them outside my window at night. We are putting some chickens in their coop soon, so I was thinking I ought to get something with enough power to take down an animal, or a rooster if he tries to maul me.

Shoots ~1000 FPS. Same gun from Trainspotting. Just mount a scope. Mine's dead accurate.

This functions in comparison to the other expensive rifles?

I dont think I would consider a pellet rifle for a my excellent compatriot at all.

Beeman, RWS, and Webley all make top-tier gaming/recreational air rifles. Gamo is junk, as is most of the stuff sold in retail stores. Benjamin-Sheridan is a possible exception.

You need to determine how much money you want to spend. Don't expect to buy a decent quality spring-powered air rifle for less than $200. The Benjamin-Sheridans are <$200, but you must be willing to pump them several times. Gets tiring really quick.

I also would strongly recommend against purchasing an air rifle for taking out anything larger than a squirrel, unless you are an experienced airgun user. Spring-piston powered airguns have a particular recoil cycle that requires a LOT of practice to become proficient enough to take out any kind of game. And don't even think of slapping on a scope to compensate for lack of practice/skill; springers will chew up lesser scopes like you would not believe due to their two-cycle recoil.

Bottom line- get a trap, call the authorities, or recruit a friend who knows how to shoot a .22 (if legal in your area) to take the critter out. Not worth it to make the animal suffer by poking it full of holes with a cheap airgun.

P.S. Serious air rifle hunters typically spend upwards of $1500 for a good rifle/scope combo, especially if the game is larger than a woodchuck. You need a high-powered .22, or even .25 air rifle and serious accuracy to take something like a raccoon down, and even then, your effective range is usually <40 yards.

www.straightshooters.com has a great selection if you want to get started in precision airgunning. PM me if you want additonal info- precision airgunning is a great, great hobby, and one that I plan to re-start once I have my own backyard again.

1150fps is the sound barrier at sea level. OK, not exact but close.

A good home killing gun must drive mass at <1100fps.

We have scads of feral cats & skunks around here. I need to get a decent 22 rimfire rifle
and shoot Subsonic Rimfire 😉 Google it.

I have a CO2 pistol that shoots about 980fps. I took down a small opossum that was harassing our outdoor cats, using hollow point hunting pellets. Anything bigger though, probably wouldn't have been killed. For a my excellent compatriot, I'd reccomend a simple .22 rifle like you can get at Wal-Mart for $100.
