What's a good o/c for FX 5900 non-ultra?

I just got a Gainward Ultra1100 (5900 standard w/128MB 2.8ns). Using coolbits hack, I have to "test settings" before applying the O/C. Took core to 445 and above no problem; however the memory fails over 760

I saw a post of a guy taking his Aopen 5900 past 800 memory. Should I not be using coolbits? Should I boost AGP voltage a little?

Thanks...

it's easily over 800Ghz for FX-5900 as mine FX-5800 already can achieved 1GHz memory and 500Mhz for core using coolbits

My Aopen 5900 runs at 490/950 and I use coolbits as well. The FX5900 is designed to run 400/850... if you're only running 760, you need to RMA that. Did you remember to hook up the external power connector?

Yea, I double checked the 4 pin power hookup. I reinstalled Nvidia drivers, Via 4in1, and lowered all my system memory timings to default. Card still won't go past 760 memory in coolbits. A weak memory chip on card perhaps?

Lucklily I bought it local. I'm gonna swap it out tomorrow, hopefully with no gripes. What should I tell them, it won't overclock? After all, card does run fine at stock speeds. Suggestions welcome... 🙂

Actually... that card is a piece of crap... comes with 2.8 ns RAM... nVidia specs call for 2.2 ns RAM. Return it and get a real FX5900.

Guess that explains the cheap price tag. Was wondering why other non-ultra 5900 cards were selling in the $300.00+ range. Damn...

Mine was $250 shipped on eBay... someone mentioned they were $225 somewhere, but maybe that's the one you got =)

You got the non-golden sample gainward. The chips that can't perform up to gainwards high standards are put on the non-golden sample boards, and paired with slow ram as well.

The gainward golden sample cards, however, are probably one of the best 5900s you could get.

I'm gonna get the Golden Sample 5900. Guess I shoulda done some homework prior to buying. The local shop has the golden sample for $320.00, so not too bad. Told myself I'd never have case lights though. Now I'll have to explain what that pretty glow is coming from inside my computer... 😉

Jeff, you got a good deal on that Aopen card. Good job...

Just popped in the Gainward FX5900 Golden Sample. What a sweet card! This thing is a piece of art. A much better box, packing, and goodies too. Humming quite nicely at 450/910, may test higher later.

Kinda like driving a new car off the lot. You feel so good, while at the same time trying to forget how much your purchase has depreciated since you pulled off the lot... 😉

Use the 52.16 drivers... it'll hum even nicer =) If you need them, let me know 😀

I found the link and am downloading now. You reported in that post you have had no BSOD's or the fog problem. How's everything, still good?

Still good... ran all the benchmarks, updated them in my profile... no issues at all.
Oh, one thing I forgot to mention... in FS2004 I couldn't set 4X AA without portions of menu's disappearing... I had to set it to application control whenver playing it, then set it back to 4X for other games... that seems to be fixed... I've had it at 4X all day now and tried FS2004 and the menu's are displayed correctly now.

2.8ns or 2.2ns is just the speed of the memory. 2.8ns RAM is 357MHz and 2.2ns RAM is 454MHz. And neither of those is correct. The memory speed for the 5900 is 400MHz which is 2.5ns. Unless they ship underclocked memory. The specs for the 5900 is 400MHz/400HMz
