whats a good movie to edit and cut out parts from an avi/mpg clip?

My aunt just sent me a CD with a video clip on it, and it has a part that was when the cam was recording accidently ahd its just 10 minutes of a chair leg. How would i cut this part out?

depending on the codec used, if it's an AVI or mpeg-1 you can use virtualdub which is free. If you just want to clip that part out that's what I would recommend.
