Whats a good mountain bike for 200?

I ben told the stuff at Target sucks. So recommend something for 200. It could be new or used but not too old.

Unless some college kid needs cash really badly, or the bike is stolen, you won't find a "good" mountain bike that is new, or used but not that old.

Revise your budget to $300 and get a Trek 820. Anything cheaper is garbage. Ask a local bike shop for info on used bikes...you may get lucky.

mtbreview check the reviews on some of the older frames and then check the classifieds.

Edit: actually get a cheap bike and ride it till the wheels pop off. there's no need to
buy anything fancy when you hit the trails for the first time.

what kind of riding will you be doing?

if you're just going to ride around your neighborhood... those department store bikes should be fine.

Well, except for the need to avoid death, that is. A department store bike will fall apart before you ride 10 miles on a real trail. I've had it happen, and it's really dangerous to even try it.

Try going to a good bike shop and see if they have a close out from the year before. I just bought a Rally for $260, it was $330. Plus at a good bike shop they'll make sure the bike is the correct size for you and inspect it before you take it. Also, they generally will service the bike for a year or two.
