what's a good mobo for p4 3.06b?

hey guys, my dad just got a free computer from his old company that went under (apparently they forgot he had it and everyone was too busy pulling copper wiring out at the ends anyways 😛).

i didn't know what it was until i opened it up, it has 2 GB dual ddr mushkin pc2700 ram. and from the looks of the mobo it's a soyo SY-P4I 845PE V1.0 and when i turned it on it said 3.06 GHz with hyperthreading so i got a 3.06b p4. and i've only had experience with AMD mobos, so i need reccomendations on good p4 mobos.

my current rig is an old 1700+ on a FIC AN-11 mobo that i could only overclock to 1900+ at 1.6Ghz but i have 2x sticks of 512MB (1 kingston 1 crucial). but my video card is a radeon 9700 pro. so what i'm thinking is to transplant the 9700 pro to the new comp and perhaps replace the mobo.

i don't know if anyone has had any experience with the 3.06b chip, but i'm thinking about maybe overclocking it (probably not though since intels aren't really overclockable), but mainly i'm looking for a good mobo that'll handle dual ddr400 memory. which means i'll be selling the dual mushkin sticks and buying dual something else (probably hyperX) memory.

if anyone has any suggestions for my new setup, please let me know. the one good thing about the soyo board, however, is that it has 6 pci slots, whereas alot of boards only have 5. i really do use alot of pci crap, so please take that into account when reccommending a good mobo.

there is no such thing as the "3.06c" since all "C" pentium 4 cpus run at 800fsb. There is a 3.0C, and a 3.2C, but no "C" cpu at 3.06ghz. The 3.06ghz model is an older horse, based on the 533fsb. The 3.06 was the only 533fsb cpu to have hyperthreading, so your cpu is nothing out of the ordinary.

As for a good motherboard, i would recommend something based on the intel 865 / 875 chipsets. My recommendation: Asus P4P800, Abit IC7. Others will most likely have similar recommendations. Just remember, these boards use dual channel memory, so you must install memory in identical pairs, or as closely as possible. These mobos also offer good overclocking potential, and support for the p4"C" chips.

Hope that helps 🙂

woah, you're right, i'll edit the post immediately. i'm looking on the trade forums, it seems this thing is semi-sought after, does anyone know about it's performance?

should i sell it to get a 3.2c? like does anyone know how the 533 FSB stacks up against 800 FSB?

thanks!

You probably won't be able to run that chip at 800MHz FSB so you might want to consider getting a Granite Bay motherboard for it. The ASUS P4G8X Deluxe is a sweet board. But you can run the chip at it's default FSB and overclock it on a Canterwood or Springdale board. The IC7-G looks good to me. It doesn't have the OTES cooling that the Max3 has nor the SecureIDE thing but it has everything else.
