After perusing the hot deals forum I decided I should upgrade my unit. This will be my first self-built computer. I do not know how to select a motherboard for this processor or even what to look for in a motherboard in terms of compatibility and performance. I'm looking to spend under $100 for the motherboard.

Also, is there anything special I need to know about building an AMD system?

Thanks for your wisdom,

cmai

I've read about ram compatibilty issues with this board? Is crucial a safe bet?

Also is the onboard usb 2.0 or 1.1?

Thanks,

cmai

onboard is 1.1 but theres a rear plate with 2 2.0 ports.

i would think that crucial would be fine.

8rda+

or

Abit NF7-S if you need more features... ( SATA )

I would avoid Crucial if you plan to overclock, Corsair or Hyper X... ( PC 3200 )

Would be worth it in the long run...

My 8RDA+ works just fine, thank you. But I also have a number of FIC AU13's out in the field, and they are also working well.

Personally from what I have heard I would go with the Asus nForce 2 board...A7N8X. It has gotten the best results on benchmarks and overclocks wonderfully. Make sure you get some good ram too....cough..Corsair...cough....

Board Costs: $99
256 Memory: $64

i used crucial pc2700 512mb am on the a soltek nf2 board and it was able to hit pc3200 speeds, but the timings were a bit relaxed. the barton was able to hit 3200+ though. i am happy enough with that
