I've been using my 18v ryobi chainsaw for such purposes...works great and it's quiet and light.

We have a DR brush trimmer, but they're pretty expensive (unless you get one for free :) ). It's basically just a very powerful mower.

This thing rocks forAlligator Lopper heavier trimming:

And then find an electric hedge trimmer.

Electric yard tools are a pain to drag the cord around, but they work pretty well, and maintenance is limited to your cutting surfaces, you don't have to jack around with premix, etc...

If you're only talking 1" in diameter then just man up and get a regular pair of loppers from Home Depot.

And a small hand saw for branches up to 2"

Bow saw. You'll thank me later.

Bow Saw

When I bought my house, my neighbor recommended I buy one. I have used that thing so many times, I can't even count them. I've taken down shrubs, branches and even a cedar tree the other week that was about 20' tall. Cheap and unbelievably useful for around around yard.

Edit: Just went Platinum. Woot! :D
