what's a good laptop?

i am thinking of getting a laptop. is there any brand that is better than others as far as reliability and availability of accessories? what parts are upgradeable? should i get something like a p3 700 for around $600, or pay $1000 for the p4 or amd?

Dell, gateway, and toshiba come to mind. I would buy one that parts are plentiful and can be easily purchased. Dells have tons of parts I know for sure like on ebay. Some AMD laptops have problems with heat unfortunately but most are ok. Some video is upgradeable but not much. Hard drives, ram, and the drives can be swapped out for most laptops. What are you going to be using the laptop for? You should be concerned about weight if you plan on taking it to different places. What about battery power, every gonna need it where you can't plug it in? Do you need a burner in it or a dvdrom?

These questions will get you started.

it doesn't really matter about the drives cause i will be able to network with a tower that has everything. probably using around the house mostly. how do i know which battery power to get? how is it measured? is it possible to upgrade cpu? would a p4 or amd be much better for the price than a celeron?

Just a note, there is a new small form factor and laptop computer forum. You might want to read some of the posts there, people where discussing which units they like.
