I don't think there are too many recent ones, the entertainment oriented segment of the Flight Sim genre barely has a pulse these days. :(

If you don't have the patience for 100 different gauges I think you might be best staying away from the jets.

I would recommend Microsoft's propeller sims to anyone. Graphics are superior and the planes are actually flyable. Combat Flight Simulator 2 with a Pearl Harbor add-on is really good, as is Combat Flight Simulator 3.

CFS2 w/PH add-on is WWII in the Pac. You won't find the game on the shelves but you can find it on amazon.com for about 12 bucks and then pick up the PH add-on for 20 more bucks. It's dated, but it's good.

CFS3 you will find on the shelves. WWII in Europe. Graphics are superior and it can actually be trying on a good system if you try something like setting the weather to "snowstorm" and then do a ground attack on a heavily populated area like maybe Christchurch. CFS3 does have one jet you can choose.

Pacific Fighters I threw in the trash. Graphics aren't everything, but if I'm going to crash through the trees I would just as soon not crash through the green mass at the top to find out that there is no wood between the green floating mass and the ground.

Not an answer to your question, but at least something else to consider.

I'd swear I've seen cfs2 on the "value" rack at compusa and/or officemax -- for $9.99

(I might be wrong....)

Crimson Skies. Doesn't have jets but is very easy to pick up but still challenging, great game.

Mig Alley...flying F-86 sabres & Mig-15s & such...those jets weren't terribly complicated (relative to say the F-18). Good game btw.

Other than that, some of the Jane's games like F-15 Eagle (these are old mind you) could be made into "point and shoot" games by turning off all the realism settings. Then targetting and such became automated and you just pressed the shoot button/flew the plane (slightly more complicated than that, but not by a lot).

They are coming out with a new Falcon 4.0. I used to play that all the time. That and Jane's USAF. Your gunna want a DC or atleast a P4 with HT becuase it is multi treaded. Even the First Falcon 4.0. was mulit threaded.

Wings Over Vietnam (Updated Strike Fighters): Can be found very cheaply in stores right now. The jets modelled are from the 50s and 60s, so the avionics are not very complex. The AI is fun and challenging, and there are tons of mods you can download and play with.

Falcon4:Allied Force: Hardcore, but you can use "easy" settings. Definately a sim to grow and learn with. You can even do a full "ramp start" (which is starting the F16 from scratch before a mission) by flipping all of the switches you would use in a real F-16 from the 2D cockpit.

I know you said 'jet fighter' but if you like dogfighting in general you should check out IL-Sturmovik (sp?). This is a WWII era game with some awesome dogfighting battles. Just about anyone can make a missile kill but it takes skill to make a gun kill.

But then again, you may be right.

Isn't it absolutely crazy how much discussion you read now about joysticks and jets and who can fly and who can't? I've never seen so much as a screenshot of BF2 and not being an online game guy I'm not real interested in buying it. I'm really curious though about how intense this jet is. Do you have a limited amount of fuel? Are g-forces considered, and if so can you switch that consideration on or off?

Battlefield 2 would never be considered a sim. This isn't to say that there isn't a learning curve for flying the helicopters and planes, but it doesn't hinge on being as realistic as possible.

This is true of all the combat in the game, not just the planes.

I think that they've done a pretty good job of balancing the challenge of mastering all the different kits and units in the game with the level of fun to be had along the way.

Best flight Sim on the market is IL2 Forgotten Battles along with the Pacific Fighters update.

There are mostly prop planes in the game but you can fly the first jet fighter the ME262.
