Buy him a step ladder, some painting supplies and a small tool kit. Maybe even some spackle light bulbs etc.

All the stuff you need, but run back and forth to the hardware store for.

check out cooking.com they have a great clearance section and coupon codes are generally pretty easy to find for them.I've gotten a lot of stuff from them and been very pleased with their selection and their CS
 
get something that is of high quality

coffee machine is good
a digital picture frame?
a kitchen appliance
some walkie talkies (not just for kids anymore)

or you could put together an "emergency kit"
make it fun, have all of the usual stuff but throw in condoms, booze, porno mags, a deck of cards
 
ooh.. bed bath and beyond is wonderful.. speaking from a woman's point of view.. a blender? margaritas.. or is that a girl thing?
