Panasonic DVD-RV31S or RV31K (S is silver, K is black).

Readily available for around that price, & a good all around player for the price.

The APEX 660 is a nice machine. It plays VCDs, DVDs, CDRs, CDRWs, MP3s, and more.

Also, you can software hack it and turn off Macrovision and region encoding. Good if you import any movies or want to copy some on VHS.

This unit is great if you download movies from the net. It plays VCDs without a problem, so I generally burn and watch movies on my TV instead of my monitor...the couch just feels so much better.

Has composite and S-Video outs. Also has digital out. $99 @ CC.

This one gets my vote too. It plays about anything, DVD, VCD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3. Great DVD player IMHO

Try searching for "Panasonic DVD" at PriceGrabber.com.

The Panasonic DVD-RV31S or RV31K is a great DVD Player, the best deals are:

Your local Best Buy store has it on sale for $179.99 this week, no shipping, no wait, no fuss, no rebate hassles.

Well that bites 800.com no longer carries that model :( Was going to suggest buying there and using the $20 off $100 or $40 off $200 MSN Passport deal.

Another great DVD Player is the Sony DVPNS300B or DVPNS300S (B for black or S for silver, go for Silver) for $159.94 after MSN Passport $20 off $100.

Also your local Best Buy has the Toshiba SD1700 an excellent DVD Player on sale this week for $139.99 not sure what CD formats it reads but it's a great all around player.

Check the Off Topic forum and search for DVD you'll find several previous threads and you'll notice one commanility (is that even a word?) Viper GTS and I have posted in all of them.

I second the Sony(s). Terrific machine, imo (but, I've got a lot of Sony stuff!).

I like my Sony. It was about $200 a few months ago. If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't pay for so many bells and whistles. All I do is play movies. I don't fully use it.

You have 2 video formats for DVD players: mpeg 1 and mpeg 2. Here are the 3 standards:

VCD: mpeg1, 352x240 resolution, 1150kbps constant bitrate (players will typically support up to 2500kpbs, and higher bitrate is known as xVCD)

SVCD: mpeg2, 480x480 resolution, between 0 and 2500kbps variable bitrate

DVD: mpeg2, 720x480 resolution, betwen 2000 and 10000kbps variable bitrate

So as you see, SVCD is basically the same as DVD, but at a lower bitrate because it's on a CD instead of DVD. (lower density)

Of course, you should only care about this if you plan on burning your own movies to CDR...
