What's a good GSM smartphone just for traveling?

I recently picked up a Galaxy Nexus on Verizon's network. My previous phone, an unlocked Nexus One has some issues which make it unreliable and it'll probably be retired soon.

For the sole purpose of having a smartphone for traveling overseas (GSM), what is a good unlocked phone one could get? I don't care what OS (even Windows Mobile). I do need 3G capability, and the abillity to run at least Mango or Froyo. It doesn't need ICS or 4G or anything. I want a smart phone so I can use Google maps and search and Yelp and so forth.

The Focus S looked perfect but I was surprised to find that the $99 subsidized price jumps to something like $600+ for the unlocked version. (Just curious, can you get a AT&T Focus S and unlock it using software?)

Anyway, what would you guys get in my scenario. Please don't tell me to just borrow my wife's old iPhone 3GS. I would like to purchase something.

If you had a Galaxy Nexus for GSM and used it on ATT/T-mobile, it is pentaband and would work anywhere you went. Wouldn't need two phones either. Of course its new and $700 though.

I have a Galaxy Nexus LTE and I am not interested in spending $700. I travel overseas like once every few years. I want to spend like $150 or less.

I would get the refurbished Dell Venue Pro. Cheap and already unlocked.

If you don't care about GPS, used AT&T Captivate. Or if you're a geek and can locate one for cheap, AT&T 7" Galaxy Tab.

Most other countries use 2100mhz for their 3G band and most phones have that.
I would get an unlocked Vibrant which is a Galaxy S on CL and can easily be bought for <$150.
But since your priority is GPS, I would think again though.

I think a Nexus S is your best bet. All of them are unlocked, and it's a solid phone with good performance. Plus, while it's a bit more expensive than other phones, it has retained it's value pretty well should you ever decide to sell it.
