What's a good GPU for me

Ok I'm so confused with all graphics cards out there..

I don't want SLI or Crossfire. I want to be able to use it now and sell it later. I want to play games with nice details and everything, but I'm confused if more memory on the GPU allows that..

right now I;ve limited it down to

8800GT, 512mb 8800GTS, 8800GTX
X2900XT, 3870XT, 3870x2

I want the best price/performance ratio but also want the best details, so I'm thinking either the 512mb GTS or the 8800GTX. What do you guys thing? Thanks.

1680x1050 resolution, right?

9600GT would run it just fine, 8800GT/8800GTS has a bit more future proofing.

Unless you're a Crysis nut, I think the 9800GX2 is the only single card that can run Crysis at max settings at 16x10. And it still doesn't run all that well >_>

Nor is the card worth the money.

Use it now and sell later..

that narrows it down to an XFX 8800GTS 512.. and I suggest XFX becasue they tend to resell very well with thier "double lifetime warranty" which allows even the second user to have a full lifetime warranty.

I'd go for a 512gts based on what you say. GTX isnt worth the extra monies imho.

Depends on your budget. I'd go:

8800GT for $179 w/MIR @ Newegg or elsewhere.

Compare benches with 9800gtx and they're not far off each other.

ok so I'm thinking of getting a 8800GTS. What's the difference between that and a 8800GTX? I know the 8800GTX has more RAM but it also draws more power, and at 1600X1080 there wouldn't be too much of a difference, right?

also what about the 2900XT? I think I might get it real cheap. My goal is to play games on with nice details for a while (without dual GPU)

If you want a 640MB GTS, hit up evgas b-stock, they have a bunch for $179

At your resolution 512mb 8800gts should handle aa/af fine also. Not with crysis though,but no card can do that.

2900xt and aa/af? I heard the 2900 series dosen't do aa/af very well.
A used 2900xt is worth about 130.00$ by the way.

Where's the love for the 9800GTX? I am really happy with the XFX one I got recently. If you're willing to shell out for an 8800GTX, definitely go 9800GTX. Here's why:

1. Less power consumption than 8800GTX, yet faster (marginally).
2. Cheaper.
3. It runs cooler and therefore can overclock like a beast. I've only just gotten mine and have every clock set about 100Mhz higher than the stock and I haven't had any artifacts yet so I am sure I can go higher.
4. It's fun to have the newest tech. (Now I'm really reaching...)

Seriously, it's a good card.

Not much love for 9800gtx because like 8800gtx there's pretty much nothing that it beats an 8800gts in at the res he plans to run. So he'd be paying 50-100$ more for maybe some performance eventually.
