What's a good font size for 6' away?

For what purpose? I can read 16pt from 6' away, but it's not ideal. For something like research posters, and "average" person tolerances for eye strain at 6', I wouldn't go smaller than 22pt. It may be large, but people tend to ignore things that require effort to read.

Then again I wouldn't expect a research poster to only be viewed from 6' either. So....I dunno.

Just in case you didn't know, 72pt is equivalent to an inch.

Unless you are designing for a group of people that are well-known to have excellent vision, then you want to make sure you aren't going to have any issues. I would make any type at least 72pt... closer to 120pt if you intend for it to be perfectly clear.

Could you be more specific about what you are doing?

16 point at 6' would be tiny... do at least 24. If it's an actual presentation with bullet points, do 36.

Are you serious?

1/4 of an inch is tiny... but 1/3 of an inch is minimum? You could barely tell the difference at 6 feet.

38 then?

For a bit I thought you wanted the font to be 6 feet tall on paper (literally)

As I said above, I would go with a minimum of 1 inch, which is 72pt

We had to do "poster" type designs in my Design and Graphics class during fall semester. (11X17)

We tried a wide variety of fonts, and even 48 pt. is small (but not unreadable) at 6'.

The size you need will depend on what you're doing, how big the media is, and whether you're looking for headline/title size or body text size.

You'll want to experiment to find what works best for your application.

It's a research presentation on a 4x3 trifold.

Gah. If I do 72 point font that would limit me to about 12 words total :p

I will have a handout with a summary and contact info that people will entirely ignore. In fact people (besides a couple of psych instructors) are likely to entirely ignore it anyway.

the bigger the better... I have shit for eyesight and usually if something is too small in a presentation I won't even bother paying any attention (exactly why my grades suffered in school!!! hooray)

For the record, 6 ft isn't that far. It's a little longer than the average person's wingspan. You're telling me you'd have a tough time reading 36 point font at that distance? All of ATOT must have 20/120 vision then. :)

I would honestly say 30 is bare minimum for easy readability at that distance.

Capt. Obvious on the scene, no worries!
Print up the word "Presentation" at various font sizes and have the most blind person in the vicinity tell you which they think is best.

My work is done!
