What's a good fold out knife?

Just curious as to everyones preferences/recommendations. I just got through partially destroying my Kershaw at work the other day so I need a new knife. (Long story short, I was sawing on a piece of a cheap desk and it bent the serrated edges like crazy, ended up breaking the tip of the knife off as well, don't ask) It was only 420 anyway

What I'm looking for: a blade with a ATS-34 blade (or better), G10 handle, about 3~4 inches in length with a serrated edge, one handed open/close. Can anyone recommend a good brand along those lines?

I was looking at:

Gerber Walker Series
Gerber Spectre Series
Buck TacLight

Actually it doesn't have to be ATS-34 or have a G10 handle: basically I want a knife I can put through hell and back and that will actually hold up and not have the blade snap off or the serrated edges bend. Trying to keep it under $180 MSRP (most of these knives I've seen at stores for about 3/4 or up to 1/2 off MSRP). Any help is appreciated, thanks

Benchmade has a few nice folders as well. And of course, there's always a Bali-Song (now Benchmade), if they're not illegal in your area.

I highly recommend gerber. I've had a couple of theirs for about 8 years now, and are in great condition (and yes, I do use them a lot). Very durable and reliable in my opinion.

Edit: Buck is just as good as gerber, if not better. My dad swears by them, and will rarely buy any other brand.

stev/Spooon - I've heard of Spyderco - looking into that now, thanks. And holy $hit @ the ColdSteel - they "claim" it can go through a car door without being damaged - that's my type of knife :D

Xerox - I'll look into those too. I've heard Gerber is pretty reliable

Scott - why would it be illegal? (Just curious)

Cal - another vote for Gerber. Are you talking fold outs or fixed?

Thanks for the replies, keep em coming!

I remember seeing a video of the knife going through the door. Was pretty cool.

Butterfly knives are illegal in certain places because they fall under the description of a switchblade. In Texas, part of the description of a switch blade in the penal code is a knife where the blade can be pulled out through centrifugal force.

I get all my custom blades done by Marlowe Knives What can I say? the guy makes freaking awesome and reliable knives. But for your price range, i'd go with the cold steel knife. I used to carry cold steel before I started getting knives from this guy.

I have been using Spyderco Enduras for years. I usually end up losing them, or in the case of one having it stolen, and they hold up great. I can pick them up at a gun store for under $45 last I checked.

i second rallispec's rec on a good knife - that gerber ez out is great - had one for years, bought a second awhile ago as well.

another option that i like very much as well is columbia river, especially the K.I.S.S. series - basically, they are made so precise that the blade folds against the handle, so they're very very thin, and it is unable to cut because it is so tight against the handle

I usually carry a Boker: Titanium boady with a ceramic blade.

You absolutely cannot pry with the blade, it's too brittle & will snap. For a cutting knife, it's great. The ceramic blade cuts about anything, and is still sharp after 10 years (I cut tape on concrete floors with it, cut cables ... it's a pretty hardy edge).

I still like the Bali Butterflys, but they're illegal in many of the places I travel.

I don't carry a pocketknife, but I do carry my Buck knife when I go deer hunting. Great knife, very durable. My brother and I have gutted several deer with it. I think i've had it for about 5 or 6 years and haven't sharpened it yet, but it only gets used a couple times a year.

I really like Buck knifes, but i've heard good things about Gerber knifes too. All three of those knifes look nice.

Benchmade. I will carry no other. I've had a couple of Gerbers, and Bucks but their blades just don't hold an edge like the 3 Benchmades I've had. I lost my firs one, lost the second one (I found it after I bought my third).

Wow, thanks for all the responses, glad to know there are some knife people on the board :D

tweaker2 - I know Kershaw has a Ken Onion series but after the disaster that was my last Kershaw I'm staying away from them for my next knife

Link

If you're still looking, I just bought one of the above knives today. (Carter I Plain) Seems pretty solid, and it seems very lightweight with a nice folding action.

Check it out, it has a G10 handle, AUS-8 blade and retails for about $60-70USD.

Another vote for spyderco...and cold steel. I've had my spyderco for about 6 years now and havent had any problems with it. I also have a cold steel SRK for about the same length of time and it's been pretty good to me as well, I know this is a fixed blade knife, but I am just vouching for coldsteel's quality.
