I am planning on buying one for my gf for her b-day. She mainly uses it for school, movies and browsing, sometimes she plays the Sims but thats it. I think of something in the hundreds (<$600 or so). Any of your suggestions would be awesome and appreciated!

i was at bestbuy yesterday and they have a 14.1" acer extensa (4420 i think) for $499
2 gb ram, i think an amd cpu, i dont remember the details. check hot deals. laptops are always on sale now for under $600 and you should find some there, or on other deal sites

"Reliable" and "under $600" don't really go together, unless you're talking previous-gen Thinkpads or something.

That said, there's lots of perfectly decent stuff in that price range these days. Better than it used to be.
