what's a good external hd used solely for backup purposes?

I'd check newegg for some that have a Western Digital drive from their Green series in them. I think Cavalier uses a lot of WD drives in their external enclosures.

The "ease of use" is going to be driven by software, not hardware. I prefer to use the built in backup software in windows or rsync for backup. Both work the same, no matter who made the external drive.

I like the Maxtor One Touch 4 Mini - it will do a full system backup, not just folders that you select as what you want backed up. The whole drive setup allows you to pop in a new drive to replace one that had a catastrophical failure and be back up and running with no data loss worth mentioning in an hour or two.
Only downside ... read the manual, as the unit does not default to using the software in a full backup method.
