Canon EOS 10D is the only one I've heard recommended. So that one. I don't know much about DSLR's...

Nikon d100 or canon 10D. That's about it unless you wanna go with the SLR that you can't change lenses with (i.e., olympus style)

Second-hand Canon D30/60 or Fuji S1 might be found for cheap if he wants something to learn on. You can get the D60 for under 1k, and the D30/S1 can be found for less than $800.

For a new one, I'd recommend he take a CF card and head to a store that has the 10D, D100 and S2 in stock and try them out. I've used all 3 and each have features that I like over the others.

Read reviews at DPREVIEW.com of course, and steve's digicams, etc.

Canon 10D seems to be best bang for the buck if you want interchangable lenses. The Sigma D9 has a large following too and is within the price range. Sigma uses the Foveon stuff...

Any questions on above, search google on keywords you'll find it.

Sorry for the thread resurrection, but I just wanted to say that tommorrow Canon is expected to announce a new entry level DSLR that everyone feels will break the $1000 street price barrier. It should be available this fall. It is supposed to have the same 6.3MP sensor as the 10D, but with a slightly reduced feature set.

Tommorrow will tell.

Check this out. I don't think the official announcement has been made yet, but Canon Europe is notorious for releasing news a few hours early. You would not believe the stir this thing is causing in DSLR circles already.
