I need to convert several formats, mainly .avi, into DVD format so that I can burn them onto a CD. It's a project for my school, and I was just wondering which ones are out there.

TMPGEnc is a good one that even has a step by step wizard. Don't expect it to be speedy, though. You will then need an authoring program to create the DVD.

TMPGEnc will get your video into DVD complaint format, but you will need an authoring program to make all the nice menus, chapters, etc. They also make one (TMPGEnc DVD Author), but it is not free, but a 30 day trial that is fully functional.

Try www.videohelp.com as there are many more tools and that site has a ton of information.

Nero can author dvds also with one of the apps included in the full version. I forget its name.
The fastest converter to MPEG2 is Cinema craft encoder (CCE).
