Whats a good cpu to go with a 4850 and 2x2gb ddr2 1066 ram???

Its a good idea to invest in a quad at this point. Most game from now on will likely support them.

A 4850 is maxed out at about a 2.8 ghz duo/quad.

whats your mobo?
If you have one that will unlock cores you could go the x2 550BE and try to unlock the extras (great success lately I hear). If you can't unlock them you'd just have a fast dual.

Heya,

I would spend a bit more and get a full on quad with L3 cache and everything. Overclocking, you'll have to get a cooler that can do it stable and end up spending the same money in the end.

The PhXII 940 BE is 3.0ghz, 6MB L3 and $155. If you have to get less, then just get the 620 Propus. But I'd shoot for the 940 at least if you want to actually upgrade and have some use in the future. A dualcore is going to be the cheaper bet and it will power that gaming machine just as fine honestly, but it won't go as far and long as a quad will over the years; if you plan on upgrading again in the future, this is not an option to consider since it's defunct if you upgrade often.

Gaming: higher clock is more valuable than quad core.
Productivity: get a quad with high cache.
Server: low power consumption efficiency.

So if you want to game, get a 3Ghz+ dualcore for less. You can get a Regor 945 at 2.9Ghz for like $65. Overclock it a tad to like 3.2Ghz or so on the stock cooler and you'll game just as good as a $165 955 which is a 3.2Ghz quad in most games (very few titles will have any advantage on a quad, not now, and not in the next year or so).

Very best,
