Ive found that most codec packs have obscure hack codecs bundled in them that cause instability and all kinds of weird anomalies (mainly in windows media player and winamp)

As someone else suggested, ffdshow is a great codec pack. Hasn't failed me yet. Get the more recent alpha version.

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack
Basically K-Lite Mega Codec is not a codec, it's just a package that includes most the common codec(s).

I downloaded the lite-version and it serves my needs. 🙂

i personally love and use only k-lite mega codec pack. each update, just uninstall the previous one, and install the new one.

ffdshow is good...
but id forego the whole "pack" method and install each codec separately since ive had some bad experiences doing the pack method w/ nimo, et al.
also vlc is a great viewer that doesnt need any codecs installed (it supports a whole bunch of them)

People actually use the K-lite one? Haha. I use DefilerPak, with ffdshow being the more important.

I use ffdshow + dsp2dshow + AC3 filter + OGG filter + Xvid and that's played everything I've tried so far. The Xvid codec was necessary for something, I forget what. ffdshow wasn't rendering it correctly.
