What's a good city scooter?

I live in a medium-sized city. I've figured out that most of the places I go on a regular basis are within a 10 mile radius of where I live. I thought getting a scooter would be super cheap on gas, since I don't use my car's trunk much anyways, and Atlanta's winters are so mild the weather wouldn't be too bad.

Is a 50cc engine an adequate size? I don't need to go much faster than 40 mph, I think.

What makes a scooter a good ride, beside the mechanical stuff?

hmm 50cc engine? no way.

i had a honda with a 125cc and i wouldn't go smaller. i still got amazing gas mileage. some of the new ones are awesome.

I want a HOnda silverwing 599cc

I can't think scooter without thinking this:

Ok, thanks for answering that. I know they go up to 250cc, but I wanted to get some opinions on the lower end.

Are there any specific features to look for? Sorry I'm asking alot of questions, I've never driven anything other than cars.

Depends how big you are.

Best city scooter I ever had was a gilera 125 when I was a kid.

Stay away from those chinese scooters and you should be ok.

It's too bad that Atlanta's streets aren't bike-friendly. When I lived there I couldn't stop thinking that. The weather is perfect for it, the streets are all monstrously wide. The people are all pretty wide too, a bike ride wouldn't hurt 🙂

iirc georgia(along with other states) defines mopeds and scooters into separate categories. mopeds are 50cc or less while scooters are 51cc plus and follow all the same requirements as motorcycles.
A 50cc that does up to 35mph can be more than enough depending on how much you weigh and the kind of traffic you are in.
More power is always nice though and will allow you to get out of situations faster.

madison is full of mopeds, I see plenty of honda metros and yamaha vinos on the road, even now.

That's true but I don't think that should be the deciding factor for the OP. A motorcycle license usually harder to get but the extra training is better for the OP in the long run anyway.

As a motorcycle rider I can say that the ability to accelerate quickly is very useful for keeping you safe in traffic.

Honda ruckus. 49cc. $2000-2500 brand new or so. Or buy used for $1500-1800.

You can always go for i think the 70cc motor swap.

Same goes for the Yahama zuma. they come in 49 or 125cc. But they have under seat storage and possible can ride with 2 people.

I started off looking at zuma/ruckus but they all wanted $2000, i just said screw it and bought a used motorcycle. Much faster, same cost. 50 mpg. Needs two hands VS one on a scoot. Not many friends want to borrow it, if i got the scoot, everyone would want to use it.

Drive up to athens. I bought a nearly new Tomos Streetmate for $200. I recently added a new exhaust for another $150. Still pretty awesome deal.

A moped is like a fat chick. Sure its great fun, but at the end of the day - you're still banging a fat chick / riding a moped and all your friends will see.

50cc ain't enough - even with gearing you probably can't get up past 40mph.

if you're gonna get a moped at least go old school and get one with pedals from the 70's. (Like a 1979 Batavus).

And these old ass mopeds only get to 25mph.

Thanks for the ideas you guys. I'd rather not have to get a special license, but if motorcycles are defined as 51cc and above, guess I'll just bite the bullet.

I would totally get a 50cc Zuma. If it isn't fast enough for you, there's a big aftermarket. 😀
