I only need high speed internet service. Don't want cable tv or phone.

Of the choices I've looked into:
Verizon 3mb dsl - $39.99/m for a year
Time Warner 5mb? - $29.95/m for a year

I've used verizon dsl w/ phone service before and it's highly reliable and I always got my 768kb speed.

How is timewarner for this area? Are there any other choices? Comcast isn't in my area.

That's comforting. Too bad the verizon dsl dry-loop isn't as cheap as their package plan.

What speeds do you get avg? I'm in Elmhurst.

Here's something I'm unsure of. Does all 'cable internet', even without cable subscription, allow you to access basic cable channels?

I'm trying to decide between dsl or cable now. Which has better avg speeds if both are stated at 5Mbps? From what I remember, dsl is separate and cable is shared? So if everybody is downloading a big file, then I'd be lagging on a cable connection?

Verizon DSL goes out in the rain all the time. Techs can't find the cause after 2 visits. Many report the same on forums. It has frustrated me to no end. DON'T DO IT.

I went with Earthlink (TimeWarner) cable internet. Speedtest.net shows my download to be around 7800-8100mbps and 400-480kbps upload. They have a promo that's $29.95/month with no contract.
