don't get me wrong, i'm not a fan boy and i have a 660gt in one rig and a 6800gt in another.

my point was the x700 is a better buy. i don't see the "considerably less" you describe here.

also, no overclock is guaranteed nor exclusive to nvidia cards.

anyway, just my.02, good luck with whatever you decide.

well, I'm actually considering refurbished cards, and I can get a vanilla 6600 for $80, but the cheapest 6600gt refurb is $135.. that's hovering in the range of an x700. To be truthful, I like the idea of the 6600gt better, just weighing my options. thanks for your info though :)

the 6600 and 700 are not going to make you happy. You say you have $140 to spend? Sell that 6200 for the difference for a 6600 GT.

For a few dollars more than a 6600, and a 700, the 6600GT and 700pro are light years ahead of its vanilla counterparts.

I also would stay away from refurb. cards... with so many people Oc'ing etc, refurb VC's make me nervous, esp since the price difference is so small from refurb to new.

New egg has a 700pro for $129, and a 6600GT for $159.

Those would be my 2 choices hands down. I like the 6600GT becuase its got a faster clock, and it Oc's well, and has done well in tests.

But the 700pro is no slouch, and is $30 cheaper.

For your price range, those are the 2 i would target. Forget the vanilla choices, for a few dollars more, the pro and GT are a lot more bang for the buck.

Let us know what you choose.

Thanks- If I knew I could get anything for the 6200 I have, the decision wouldn't be so hard. the x700pro has always been one to consider, and for my uses might be better. One thing that probably makes a difference is my monitor. it's a 17lcd, and the max is 1280x1024, so I don't need a card that can play higher resolutions than that I don't think.
I don't see a lot of info on OCing the ATI's.. is it common?

no it cant but the 6600 is around $50 dollers cheaper

response; that's true, and I've already wasted money on this TC card that's running now. running stock cooling, how well does the 6600 respond to OCing?

i went from 300/500 to 525/700

which is 225mhz increase on core and 200mhz on memory on stock cooling

tc card was a bad buy

stock with this card i got 2024 overclocked i get 3250

damm that card is an overclocking beast! did u get a good performance increase?

Checking the for sale forums here, and ebay.. i found that 6200's are selling between 50-60 on Ebay, and 60-80 here. So my guess is you should be able to get enough between your 6200 and your $130 to get a 6600gt, and settle this matter. :)

As for Oc'ing the 700P, as with ANY VC, your milage may vary. What may OC like a beast for someone, may not OC for someone else. Another reason is, i dont think a ton of people have bought a 700pro yet, as their availabilty hasn't been that great until recently(i think).

From what a see on the net...

Someone got a HIS Excalibur X700Pro PCI-Express @ 465/1050 (default = 425/864) stock cooler

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/printthread.php?t=44640

heres a site that compared both

PC Stats OC'ing a Gigabyte 700pro got 491/904

Lastly, and probably all you need to know.... here Anandtech OC'd 4 700 pros and compares it to a 6600GT.... The GT pretty much beats it up in most cases... But Oc'd the 700pro almost compares to a stock 6600gt, before Oc'ing. I still am reccommending the 6600 gt. :)
