The best thing you can do is switch to win2k. It's alot faster than 98se.

As for all those patches, I wouldn't bother with them, all they do is slow down my cable...

W2K is flat out faster than 98 or 98SE, even with all of them patched up. Don't know about ME, it was such a POS I dumped it before I formed any impressions of it's cable speed.

But even W2K benefits, at least in my case, from the link above.

Win2K has a new, more optimized TCP/IP stack.
So basically, yes, Windows 2000 will make your cable modem faster.

Its all in the TCP/IP networking code, which the operating system uses for applications to communicate with the internet. Windows 2000 has a more advanced networking system, and is more effecient with internet traffic. It wont 'speed' up your cable modem, but it will speed up certain aspects of the internet.. If you have no other need to upgrade to Win2k, other then you want 'faster' internet access.. Dont worry about it.

Your best bet is to check out the link Broadkipa posted. www.speedguide.net. It did speed up my connection significantly. I went from 20k/sec average downloads to as high as 120k/sec average in Win98. It makes some adjustments to networking settings and makes it possible for Windows to accept more data and have more connections open, meaning it will download more images at a time from a web page.

I belive WindowsMe also uses Win2K's advanced networking code. Im not sure on that.

Even with patches, I rarely download faster than 120KB in Win 98SE. I often hit 200KB+ with W2K. This is on a dual boot machine, so obviously the equipment and connection are the same. No matter how much you tweak 98 (and it does help!) I never see the same performance due to W2K's advanced TCP/IP stack.

Edit: Ooops, others beat me to the punch . I don't know if I would buy W2K just for the internet speed, but when you combine it with the stability and features, I think it's worth the $$.

Ditto on the very significant cable modem speed increase when going from 98SE (patched) to WIN2k .. it was really amazing to see how much faster internet access was ... plus the clients (98SE PC + 98SE laptop)that I share the cable connection with experienced faster access speeds.

On top of all that, WIN2k is just so much more stable, and its ability to create separate accounts for my kids (accounts that do not have administrative user rights!) means that my entire setup is more stable and more secure.
Good luck!

Don't download those so-called speed patches. They make it less then what it could be. Go here and download a program I put together and just click the dsl/cable option and press the boost button and reboot your computer. And see if it got any better. If you think you are getting packet loss(which you can check by pinging a website) Go to the options menue and click in the cable/dsl options the maxmtu box and have it and the defaultrvcwindow checked then boost it again. If you already used one of those patches be sure to remove all the changes it made before using this program.

As far as download speed I use (and recommend) a program called "Download Accelerator" it can be had from www.download.com . It can use multiple download strings at once, I use 7 at a time and get 200kbs/sec plus with my cable. It rocks, and as far as anyone (Steve Gibson included) can tell there is no "spyware" involved.
