What's a good book to read out loud for high school students

(Tomorrow is read across America day; thought I'd participate this year.)

Not trying to be critical but even though I have been out of high school for a very long time I can't imagine that they would enjoy being read to anymore than I would have at that age. It was one of those things that was nice in grade school but barely tolerable in high school. On the other hand I loved to read even then and would have really enjoyed being given time to do it as a class assignment.

The People's History of the United States.

actually that should be the history textbook for all classes in America, too bad they'd still rather teach that Columbus was a hero.

Columbus was a hero to Europeans. I don't believe in absolute right or wrong... there are only conflicts of interest. He served my best interest, so I like him. If I was a native American, I'd probably hate him. All depends on your perspective.

Harry Potter

edit: all kidding aside, it has to be a short book right? or you reading the whole book in one sitting?

I was pretty much thinking lit the rest that thought Reading Out Loud to High School students sounded somewhat like a bad idea. But it would have to be very interesting to get anyone to listen. Maybe some pron stories with actors to make it more realistic.

The complete works of Jack Handy??

I think it's a great idea to read out loud to high school students. We all know that most of them are to stoned or stupid to read for themselves.

WTF? Why are you reading outloud to HS students? That's what my kindergarden teacher did.

Perhaps you still need a kindergarten teacher to read to you (and to help you with spelling difficult words like "kindergarten") - I answered that question in the 2nd post, if only someone was there to read it to you...

Fahrenheit 451 or 2001: A Space Odyssey are both good. I'd xerox a couple chapters and hand them out to the students, though... I can't imagine high schoolers tolerating being read to.
