Western digital has the fastest IDE drive with the 8mb buffer

and overal the 2mb buffer drive still has slight edge over competition (IDE wise)

Western Digital and Seagate I've had no problems with.

Maxtor and IBMs I both have:) 75GXP and the Barracuda IV.

I also like wd. I also have a Maxtor 30 gig and had to have it replaced within a week of purchase, but since then it has been stable.

Good luck with it.

All hard drive mfg's will have a % of faulty drives. Try searching the forums for massive amounts of feedback.

I've had 2 western digital's die on me, but the replacement (referbished) drives actually worked better than the original...

My maxtor hard drive has been going strong for over a year of heavy heavy usage...

I like my Maxtor D740X a lot,it may not be the fastest HD but it`s fast and no harddrive stays the fastest for long, don`t forget you`ve Maxtor`s great customer support as well.

Maxtor - Going on number 8 now and have not had to RMA a single one in 5+ years. Just a note if you go with the Maxtor in a retail box... be sure to check and make sure it is a true Maxtor and not a Quantum. This may be old news to the readers in here, but I was told Maxtor bought Quantum. The last Maxtor retail boxed 40g I purchased three months ago had a new 20g Quantum in the box. CompUSA swapped it on the spot.

I think this may be more of a Ford Vs. Chevy thing. I like the performance and feel of the WD slightly more than any other, but for piece of mind the Maxtor is what I lean to now.
